Highlights for 2017-18

  • Implemented a family engagement initiative, Parent Teacher Teams, for PreK through 6th grade.
  • Focused on close reading and concept mapping in reading.
  • Framed all learning through content area reading to boost student vocabulary and content knowledge.
  • Continued to focus on standards-based instruction in reading and math through standards-based unit planning in reading, writing, math and the other content areas.
  • Introduced Visible Learning by developing student dispositions focused on executive function skills and learner qualities.
  • Implemented the four anchors of RULER across the school and introduced RULER to families to use at home.
  • Worked with our community-based organization partners and reduced chronic absenteeism by 7%. Focused on reducing student tardiness as part of our initiative to improve student attendance.
  • Rolled-up our dual language program in Vietnamese and Spanish to fourth grade.
  • Increased GLEA enrollment for Baby Grads and planned ways to sustain the GLEA program.
  • Implemented IMPACT teams using STAR assessment in math and reading to track progress of individual students and change interventions to meet student needs.

Plans for 2018-19

  • Focus on Teacher Clarity of success criteria by working with external consultants and in partnership with three other Highline elementary schools to develop standards and unit rubrics and plans.
  • Implement iReady as a way to track student learning and monitor progress.
  • Implement the WCH Learner Dispositions to increase students’ self-management of the learning process.
  • Increase parent involvement in our parent-teacher teams and have parents teach their child the three goals for each grade.
  • Increase student independence reading grade level text by getting stronger at annotation in close reading and concept mapping across the content areas.
  • Implement the Feeling Words Curriculum for RULER and to introduce the feeling words curriculum to students.
  • Continue to focus on improved attendance with a focus on students with 10 plus absences and tardies.
  • Roll-up our dual language program in Vietnamese and Spanish to fifth grade.
