Coding Their Future: College-Level Computer Programming in High School

Coding Their Future: College-Level Computer Programming in High School

Highline High School students are getting a head start on their futures through an innovative partnership with Eastern Washington University.

In this hands-on class, students learn the foundations of computer programming and problem-solving. These skills are essential in today’s digital world. Along the way, students gain confidence and experiences that prepare them for college, careers and life after graduation.

Programs like this reflect Highline Public Schools’ commitment to innovative learning and our promise that every student will graduate prepared for the future they choose.

The EWU Computer Programming course is offered through our College in High School (CiHS) program, which allows students to earn both high school and college credit while tackling real college-level coursework.

To teach the course, our educators participate in additional training. This ensures the level of instruction in high school matches the level of instruction offered on college campuses.

This College in the High School course is one of many dual credit opportunities available across our high schools. Dual credit options include exam-based programs like Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB), as well as course-based classes offered in our high schools, skills centers and partner colleges. In addition to computer science, students can explore subjects like business marketing, construction, engineering, Microsoft IT, environmental education and more.

Part of Highline’s Work to Redesign Secondary Learning

This course is one example of how Highline Public Schools is redesigning secondary schools to make learning more meaningful, rigorous and relevant. As part of our districtwide Secondary Redesign initiative, Highline High School adopted a new four-period schedule to give students more time for in-depth, hands-on learning and greater flexibility in choosing courses aligned with their goals.

By expanding access to real-world learning experiences—like college-level programming—Highline is delivering on the Highline Promise to know every student by name, strength and need, so they graduate prepared for the future they choose.
